The Appeal by John Grisham

So I bought the above book at a second hand stall in AmCorp for RM10.

Let me tell you about John Grisham and my love-hate relationship with his books... I LOVE the idea behind his stories. The conspiracy theories, the drama of it all. But in my humble opinion, as an avid 'bookaholic' (yes, it's a real term), his writings lack execution. He fails time and time again to clinch a winner at the best possible point of his books. At one point, I gave up reading John Grisham. This was after "The Runaway Jury". So you might say I don't like John Grisham's novels. And I STILL maintain that I don't. (because truly, he disappoints so many time)

However, "The Appeal" comes along. This is not a new book. Of course not. It has been around for years. I only just picked it up this year. I have to say... This book DID NOT BLOW MY MIND. It gave me so much more than that. It was accurate and real. The execution was flawless. And I ended the book almost hoping he would give me what he always gave in his other books. A happy ending and the bad boys lose. But that's not real. So he gave the book what it NEEDED and not what it SHOULD have... I am told from my reading of reviews that instead of gushing about the book (which I am unabashedly doing right now), I should give the idea of what the book is about.

Here is a simple synopsis. The book opens with a surprising judgment for the Plaintif against a big corporation (think Erin Brokovich) who was found guilty of polluting the water of a small town causing the death of the Plaintiff's husband and child and creating a cancerous town. The damages awarded are huge. But now the trial is over, the appeal looms ahead. The book follows two stories. One of the struggle of the lawyers who risked everything to fight for the Plaintiff and their continous effort and struggle to maintain the verdict on appeal. And the other of the machine of the corporation fighting to win the appeal at all costs to avoid a floodgate of tort claims against the corporation including manipulating the seats of the supreme court to obtain a judgment in their favour.

It was worth it. The risk of buying another John Grisham. I still tasted the bitter after-taste of his previous books while making the purchase. But I was awarded in the end. Awesome read.

Girl you're so one in a million
You are, Baby you're the best I ever had
Best I ever had,
And I'm certain that
There ain't nothing better

Favorites: Siti Nurhaliza

Hahahaha... legendary... Thing is she's been laying low ever since her marriage and appart from the occasional functions and events she stayed out of the limelight. So there wasn't a lot of shows she participated in to sing. And the time that she DOES appear, her fashion sense makes me cringe. It was like her fashion sense prior to E.M.A.S (her album) only worse. And here i thought she had all the money in the world to splurge on the good stuff.

Anyways. she has been incommunicado in her official page/blog too. Its been almost a year since her latest post.

THEN she made a talk show. Urgh. apppearing in the public eye in the worst way possible. But then all talk shows in Malaysia sucks anyways.. (mentally shrugging)

So what was my point? I love Siti. Though because of her antics as said before, I had to endure ridicule for choosing to love a singer like this. But seriously.. there is nothing out there like her. She's amazing and her voice reaches and grabs my heart everytime. Its hard not to root for the girl so many hates. :)

I shall end with an i told you so by posting her performance in AJL that brought the house down more than the entire show of newbies could do. AND she was performing on a sore throat and a fever. (ON THAT NOTE: you can do anything with a sore throat. tak payah nak kecoh sangat sakit tekak tapi tak make an effort pon. padan muka. dah la kedekut ilmu. KARMA. they just bite don't they. This is unrelated with this post btw. haha..) ENJOY

Favorites: Calvin & Hobbes

I relate to the comic strip.. it's real. it's what we went through as children and sometimes still do. He is not annoying (most of the time).. and he's accurate. he's my thoughts i never had the courage to say out loud.. it was simple and simply common sense on everyday things. but there's nothing like it. Anyways. below is one of my favorites. in my dream i was already waking up and doing my morning routine when suddenly mom wakes me up for school. IT SUCKS! coz i was already fed up doing my morning routine i.e. waking up, mandi, etc...
